Shipperies public house

Hello  Rob,

I did hear that the former Shipperies public house on Durning Road was named after an exhibition that took place in the 19th century.  Do you have any further inform relating to this event.

Yours

  1. Hello Kevin,

The Shipperies public house was probably constructed a year or so before the adjoining Fire Station, but in a very different Victorian style. The pub was named after the International Exhibition of Navigation, Travelling, Commerce and Manufacture Exhibition - locally known as the Shipperies Exhibition - held in Liverpool in 1886 at the nearby Exhibition Hall in Edge Lane, overlooking Wavertree Park. The correct name for the event was "The International Exhibition of Navigation, Travel, Commerce and Manufacture", shortened by most people to the Shipperies Exhibition.

This three storey building with steeply pitched roof, front gables and dormer windows, is built in bands of red and yellow pressed brick. The front and side elevations are decorated with stone-and terracotta dressed windows, with large sliding sash windows, and fretted bargeboards.

The main entrance to the Shipperies is on Durning Road, ornamented with a small first floor balcony feature and oriel window. At the street corner however, an angled doorway sits beneath a heavily moulded pendentive cantilever carrying the corner of the building and looking, no doubt intentionally, something like the prow of a ship. The Shipperies operated as a public house until recently, when it was purchased by Liverpool City Council.

I recently purchased a medalion relating to the exhibition.(See photographs)

Local historian, John Hussey has an excellent reference to the exhibition on his web site.

  2. Just to say that Durning Rd fire station opened in July 1884 so it pre dates the Shipperies pub

  3. Just been to see The Shipperies after watching the movie Across The Universe where Jude and Max sing Hey Jude. What´s happening to the pub? I assume it must be protected but there is a lot of regeneration going on in that area. Hope it´s safe and will one day open again.
