Higsons Beer Mats
Hello LHS,
can you help settle an argument that the Liverpool Brewers once ran a advertising campaign on thier beers mats using the names of Liverpool streets.
they certainly did. Some of the names (from memory) were Gwladyst Street, Doc Road, Albert Dock, Belle Vale, Count Erode, Birk N Head, and of course Penny Lane.
There was also Mag Hull - a famous Landlady (IIRC), Wallace E Tunnel - a champion Jockey(I think), Scotty Road - the momeory is fading... Certain about the first two, may be wrong about the last.
The Great Crosby, Norris Green, Phil O'Monic, Mosslley Hill, Liz Card, Penny Lane, Wes Derby (jockey), Birk'n'Head, Olive Mount, Wallace E.Tunnel, Clayton Square, Doc Road, Count Erode, Kirk Dale, M62, Gwladys Street, Lord Street & Otto Spool makes 18, I do not have copies of Ann Field or Mag Gull or Albert Doc which are all above. Makes at least 21. Can post pics if required
The 24 originals were Albert Dock, Ann Field, Belle Vale, Birk'n'Head, Clayton Square, Count Erode, Doc Road, Gwladys Street, Kirk Dale, Liz Card, Lord Street, M62, Mag Hull, Mossley Hill HI.GSO.N, Norris Green, Olive Mount, Otto Spool, Penny Lane, Phil O'Monic, Pierre Head, Rock Ferry, The Great Crosby, Wallace E Tunnel and Wes Derby. Later there was another set that included Oriel Chambers, Polly Tek, Ed Gill, Adele Phee.

I used to collect these...I'm sure the one that says 'Higsons Everton' should be 'Gwladys Street'. Sorry if the spellings wrong, I'm a red!

ReplyDeleteThere was also (if memory serves) one for 'Rock Ferry', with a cartoon which looked very like Bryan F.
ReplyDeleteDID HIGSONS EVER BREW AND SELL THEIR OWN LAGER ? THERE IS A FEW BOB AND A FEW PINTS ON THIS
ReplyDeleteThey did indeed brew their own lager. Higsons's Pilsner Lager and then Kaltenberg.
