Liverpool`s Official Motto

what is the meaning of Liverpool citys official motto translated from latin and does it have an origin in literature?

The motto of Liverpool 'Deus Nobis Haec Otia Fecit' and is from the Roman poet Virgil. It is commonly translated as 'God has given to us this leisure'.
The motto of Liverpool University 'Haec Otia Studia Fecit' is a response to the city`s motto and is translated as 'This leisure promotes our studies'.
