McDonough's General Store, Ainsworth Street, Liverpool

Hello,

I don't know whether you can help me or point me in the right direction.  I am looking for any information with regards to the general store that was located in Ainsworth Street, Liverpool during the 50's and 60's.  I believe it was run by the McDonough family. Daniel & Margaret (Mary).

Ideally I would like a photograph of the shop.

Kind Regards

Carl Wilson

  1. Hello Carl,

my name sake street is situated off Brownlow Hill directly behind the the Adelphi Hotel. There are no remaining properties left in the street. Referring to a 1961 Kellys Directory there was only two properties occupied by John Taylors, Engineers and Liverpool Corporation City Engineers Depot. There was not reference to to any shops or other properties in the street so I assume the general store was demolished before 1961. I have searched for photographs of the street, but unfortunately I could not source any.

I have enclosed a scan of the 1900 Gores directory that illustrates the diverse range of commercial properties that where in Ainsworth Street at the turn of the last century.

  2. I too have been searching for old photographs of Ainsworth St., Liverpool, as my g-grandmother, Norah Sullivan, was the proprietor of the Beer House at No. 17/19 in the late 1800's/early 1900's.

During my search online of the National Archives, I came across the following, curious, entry that followed on from a reference relating to Norah Sullivan: "Photo album purchased from second hand shop 9/7/02 - M380PWK/4/10 c.1900-1950's".

I've not explored this any further, but it could be that the general store referred to above is depicted.

  3. The shop was on the corner of Ainsworth and Brown streets.
As a kid in nearby Tong Street we used to "nick" potatoes from outside the shop and cook them on a bonfire we lit in Back Russell street.
They were good people to my Mum & Dad.
