Wykes Court Dale Street
Hello Rob
I am looking for a house called Wykes Court that I believe was situated around Dale Street in the 1780`s.
Wykes Court was the home of John Wykes, a Prescot born(1720) Watchmaker and Liverpool Banker. He purchase the original house immediately opposite the end of Crosshall Street, and in 1764-5 the property was rebuilt and called Wykes Court which was laid out for his residence, coach-house, stables, garden, manufactory, warehouse, and various other buildings, ail arranged about a large rectangular courtyard The house lay to the north, next the garden, which stretched towards Tithcbarn Street. The entrance to the whole was on the south-west side, under an archway from Dale Street. Here John Wyke conducted his business as a watch and clock and watch-tool Later becoming the site of the Liverpool Gas Light Company.
In 1778 John Wyke was prominent amongst the gentlemen who established the first dispensary in Liverpool. This was also in North John Street, at the northern corner of Princes Street, the site of the new buildings of the Royal Insurance Company.
According to historical records when wykes died children from the bluecoat school accommpanied the funeral cortege up to low hill where children from prescot were waiting to join in.
John Wykes was a very wealthy man who contributed to many prescot charities.
Today a road on a modern estate in prescot bears the name Wykes
This was brilliant and very interesting! In researching my family history, I found a many times g-grandfather who was listed as working as a watch and tool maker and living in Wykes Court, on his daughter's birth certificate. Wonderful stuff!
Wyke & Green was a partnership of John Wyke with brother - in - law Thomas Green. The partnership lasted c1772-81 and Liverpool Museum have a partnership longcase.
John Wyke. Born pre 1720 and died in 1787. He was also a good watch and clock toolmaker/supplier and invented a wheel cutting engine. Produced very large catalogue of tools. His address was Wykes Court, Dale Street, Liverpool and also had premises in Prescott in 1780. Liverpool Museum have a clock made by him c1770

Peter / Rob,
ReplyDeleteThe map location is slightly misleading as shown. It lies in the open area approached by a tunnel entrance slightly East of the location shown.
Iain Taylor
